ACS (American Chemical Society) Publications, in partnership with ShanghaiTech University, hosted Symposium: Innovation in Materials Science in late July. The three-day event at ShanghaiTech University featured world-renowned scientists from China and around the world.
ShanghaiTech University President Professor Jiang Mianheng, ACS Executive Director and CEO Thomas Connelly welcomed the attendees, more than 200 students, postdocs, and senior researchers from around the world who came to learn about cutting-edge research at ACS Publications’ fourth innovation symposium.
The three-day event featured five plenary sessions including Cutting-edge Nanomaterials; Materials for the Environment; Materials for Energy; Materials for Photon Sciences; Materials for Biology. Keynote lectures were given by W. E. Moerner, professor of chemistry at Stanford University and 2014 Nobel laureate, and Jiang Lei, dean of the School of Chemistry at Beihang University and a 2017 Humboldt Research Award recipient. Scientists including Professor Frank Caruso (The University of Melbourne), Professor Prashant Kamat (University of Notre Dame), Professor Catherine J. Murphy ( UIUC), Professor Teri Odom (Northwest University), Professor Robin D. Rogers (University of Alabama), Professor Ted Sargent (University of Toronto), Professor Paul S. Weiss (University of California), Professor Hao Yan (Arizona State University), Professor Jiang Lei (Beihang University), Professor Zhao Dongyuan (Fudan University), Professor Yang Xueming (Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, CAS), Professor Liu Zhongfan (Beijing University), Professor Zhao Yuliang (CAS), Professor Liu Zhi (ShanghaiTech University), Professor Chia-Kuang Frank Tsung (Boston College) delivered speeches. ShanghaiTech Professors Lin Bolin, Mi Qixi, Ning Zhijun, Zhang Yuebiao, Zhong Chao also presented their research advances.
On the second day, a ribbon-cutting ceremony presided over by ACS Executive Director, CEO Thomas Connelly and ShanghaiTech University Vice President Li Ruxin was held for the opening of the “Science Meets Art: C&EN’s Chemistry in Pictures” exhibition.
Exchange of world-class scientific discovery continued with a poster session complementing the broad topical areas of the symposium. The poster winners included Jianxi Liu (Northwestern University), Li Yingfeng (ShanghaiTech University), Gao Xuejiao (Shanghai Jiao Tong University), Ren Kefeng (Zhejiang University), and Cui Mengkui (ShanghaiTech University).
ACS Publications will host its next symposium in Beijing. The event, ACS Publications Symposium: Innovation at the Frontier of Chemistry & Life Science, will be held in partnership with Tsinghua University and Peking University from December 2nd to 4th.
